Marriage Ceremonies and Traditions
The Unity Sand Ceremony – a meaningful, symbol of two lives united.
In this timeless marriage ceremony, the couple pours sand from their own individual containers into one special container, symbolizing their unity as one.
A Unity Sand Ceremony may also include family and friends.
Various colors of sand are given to ceremony participants, who add their sand to the couple’s sand, all flowing into a single container, culminating in a uniquely personal symbol of unity.
The Jumping Over the Broom Ceremony
Dating back to slave days, jumping over the broom together has been part of weddings for Black couples who want to honor that tradition.
At the end of the Wedding Ceremony, after the kiss and the presentation of the couple to their guests, a special broom is placed in the wedding couples path. The Bride and Groom then jump over the broom on their way out.
As an alternative, often the couple will jump over the broom just before the Wedding Pastor pronounces them Husband and Wife.
The broom used in the wedding ceremony is often a beautifully handmade or decorated broom that the couple keeps as a memento of their wedding day.
